August 13 – Jeremiah 4-6

I was noticing some common phrases in these chapters.  Phrases like “declares the Lord”, or, “Thus says the Lord.”  As I began looking at the passages I began to get a pretty good picture of what is going to happen to God’s chosen people.  And the reasons are pretty evident as well.  You see the words describing their behaviors such as, wicked, evil, forsaken, adultery, harlotry, etc.

I hope you caught verse 5 in chapter 5 “But they too, with one accord…” it would appear they all were together in their self destructing, evil behavior towards God.

I also found it interesting that in Lot’s time God would have saved/redeemed Sodom and Gomorrah for 10 righteous people – which of course were not found.  Here in chapter 5 we see it stated that if one man; one man could be found then God would pardon the Israelites.

We also see God’s mercy in that He will keep His promise and a remnant will remain as God says in 5:18 “Yet even in those days,” declares the Lord, “I will not make you a complete destruction”.

Chapter 6 uses words like they don’t listen, their ears are closed, they cannot hear and then He goes on to say since you have not listened….

“If you will return, O Israel, “declares the Lord, “Then you should return to Me.” God is giving Israel the opportunity to avert destruction.  All they need to is return to Him.  And yet, they do not!  How often when God is what I need to I return to everything but God.  Sad, sad revelation, but then as I have stated before, I am not so different than those little ol self destructing children.  Accept for the grace of God go I.

I can’t help but wonder if God was to look at our Country today, just how many He would find that have a true heart to follow Him. How many would He find whose ears are attentive to His voice?  I can’t worry about them, but I sure best be making sure that I have a true heart and ears that are listening.

Until tomorrow – Be encouraged,

One Response to August 13 – Jeremiah 4-6

  1. Jack Bass says:

Chapter 10. Jeremiah is trying to explain how absurd and stupid it is to pursue other Gods when there is only one true God and that is the one who rescued them fro Egypt and has preserved them with his love. I love the way he phrases it in verse 5 Like a scarecrow in a cucumber field, their idols cannot speak; they must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them they can do no harm nor can they do any good. There is no other God and never has been like our God the one and only God who created everything that has been and forever will be. With his wisdom he designed the earth as well as the heavens for all with understanding of his love to enjoy. Those who persist in this notion of believing in Pagan worship will perish like the people of Jerusalem. Verses 13-29 describes the anger of God and what he plans to do to Judah for their disobedience to his laws. I truly beleive that if the people would but humble themselves and quit trying to prove that they are equal with God that he would always forgive anything they do. I also believe this holds true to us today.

Chapter 11 This chapter demonstrates the evil and meanness of the people of Israel and Judah when they were plotting to kill Jeremiah because of his warnings to them of Gods intentions to destroy them all for their complete disobedience of God laws. God established a covenant between himself and them when he brought them out of Egypt and they have never kept the covenant and continue to rebel against God ever since. God tells Jeremiah in verses 21-23 this therefore this is what the LORD Almighty says: I will punish them. Their young men will die by the sword, their sons and daughters by famine. Not even a remnant will be left to them, because I will bring disaster on the people of Anathoth in the year of their punishment. God is the same today as he was then and loves us when we are obedient to him and his word. He showers us with blessings everyday of our lives. If we are true to his word and accept Jesus as our personal savior we can be assured we will be with him in heaven when our life here is finished.

Chapter 12. This chapter is starts with Jeremiah asking God why is it that rich and high and mighty people just seem to have it all when. He is complaining that they always seem to get more while he doesn’t. He is led to slaughter. He wants to know how long they will be punished for their sins. God knows the heart of his people including Jeremiah and punishes accordingly. Verses 14-17 tells Jeremiah that the people that took the land and had his people under their thumbs so to speak would be punished for their actions and the land would return to his people. If the people recognize him as the God of all Gods then he will bestow grace on them but if not then he will take it all away again. He dis[lays in these verses love for all people who can live together no matter what their origin.

Chapter 13. Jeremiah is told to put a wine skin around his waist and I suppose this is to show how God with his laws had the Israeli Nation clinging to him. When the wine skin was buried and after a few weeks it was completely useless. Pretty much the same when the Israeli people became engaged in the culture of other people different than theirs they became completely useless. The rest of the chapter describes how miserable he will make on all the people. It doesn’t matter if you be a prophet, King, Queen of a child they are all going to suffer Gods wrath. We can’t fool God with any thoughts or deeds that he doesn’t approve of. He knows all sees all and knows the intentions of our hearts so shape up people. In Christ, Jack.

Father God I know you know my heart and I pray that what you find there is pleasing to you. I know my love for you is great and my trust in you is complete. Be with my wife and I as we continue our walk with you along this old bumpy walk of life. I seek your blessings on my church as well as our missionaries. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
